How Blue Rock Transformed a Specialty Needlework Store’s Online Presence

Bringing a Beloved Craft Store Into the Digital Age

Not every digital transformation starts in a corporate boardroom. Sometimes it starts in a specialty needlework shop in Arizona, where hand-stitched antique reproductions meet a community of passionate crafters — and where the phone won’t stop ringing with orders.

Attic Needlework is a specialty store focusing on antique reproductions and modern counted cross-stitch samplers. With a loyal following built through word of mouth, Instagram, and a dedicated newsletter, owner Carolyn Clifford had built something rare: a thriving niche retail business with a deeply engaged customer base. But as demand grew, the manual processes that had served the business for years were becoming a bottleneck.

That’s where Blue Rock came in.

The Challenge: Growing Demand, Manual Processes

Attic Needlework faced the kind of problem every small business owner dreams of — too much demand to handle manually. Orders came in by phone and email. Event registrations were tracked on paper. Deposits were collected by hand. And the existing website, while functional, wasn’t designed to support any of it digitally.

Carolyn needed more than a website refresh. She needed a partner who could meet her where she was, understand the unique needs of a specialty retail business, and help her build a digital foundation — without disrupting the personal, hands-on approach her customers loved.

Our Approach: A Phased, Collaborative Transformation

Rather than a single big-bang project, Blue Rock took a phased approach that matched Carolyn’s pace and preferences. We worked collaboratively through regular consulting sessions, ensuring every step felt manageable and that the team at Attic Needlework was empowered to maintain what we built.

Phase 1: A Modern Web Presence

The first step was establishing a solid digital foundation. We migrated Attic Needlework’s website hosting and email to Bluehost and built a brand-new website with a modern theme, social media integration, and refreshed branding — including a new logo. The site launched in November 2024, and customer feedback was immediately positive.

But a great-looking website was just the beginning.

Phase 2: Digital Event Registration

Attic Needlework hosts highly anticipated events that regularly draw over 100 attendees, each requiring deposits, payment plans, and careful tracking. Previously, all of this was done manually.

We implemented a full digital registration system using WooCommerce and Event Tickets Plus, complete with:

  • Automated registration workflows — customers register online, receive confirmation, and pay deposits within a defined window
  • Flexible payment processing — Stripe, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and PayPal
  • Automated email reminders for deposits and balances via AutomateWoo
  • Waitlist management with manual flexibility for VIPs and special cases
  • QR code check-in at multiple stations for event day
  • Excel exports for internal tracking and reconciliation

The system worked. Within weeks, over 120 registrations were claimed and their deposits collected digitally — a process that previously required hours of manual coordination.

Phase 3: Full E-Commerce Launch

With the registration system proving out the payment infrastructure, we were ready for the big move: launching Attic Needlework’s first true e-commerce product.

The America 250 — a commemorative needlework collection — went live on the WooCommerce storefront in early 2026. The result exceeded all expectations: over 800 orders in the first 24 hours.

The demand was so strong that it drove immediate follow-on work: updating shipping estimates, adding homepage notices for fulfillment status, and scaling the customer communication strategy from phone calls to web-based updates.

From there, the platform continued to grow:

  • Variable products — fabric kits with dropdown options for different linen counts
  • Product bundles — charts paired with thread and fabric, with tiered discount structures
  • Hybrid shipping — WooCommerce Shipping for online orders alongside the store’s existing Stamps.com workflow for phone and email orders
  • Newsletter integration — connecting MailChimp campaigns to the website for SEO and subscriber growth
  • Event countdown timers and dedicated event pages for upcoming programs like Summer School 2026

Ongoing: Training and Empowerment

Throughout the engagement, a key priority has been making sure Carolyn and her team can manage the platform day to day. From WordPress editing techniques and media management to WooCommerce product creation and order tracking, we’ve provided hands-on training so that Attic Needlework owns its digital future — with Blue Rock available as a consulting partner whenever needed.

The Results: A Business Transformed

What started as a website migration has grown into a complete digital transformation:

  • 800+ orders in 24 hours on the first major product launch
  • 120+ event registrations and deposits collected digitally in the first event cycle
  • Reduced phone inquiries as customers self-serve through the website
  • Growing online presence fueled by newsletter campaigns, Instagram, and a modern, searchable website
  • An empowered owner who can create products, manage events, and update content independently

More importantly, Attic Needlework hasn’t lost what makes it special. The personal touch, the passion for the craft, and the deep connection with customers are all still there — now supported by technology that keeps up with the community’s enthusiasm.
